The 50thT’was the morning after the night before
50 years ago today
When Murray and his blushing bride
Awoke to a new way
Married they were so young and bold
Starting their new life
Murray couldn’t help but smile a little
As he gazed upon his wife
You see he’d gone away from this fair land
He went off overseas
To see the sights and sounds and things
And look at lots of trees
He hoped that while he was away
His plans, they were not silly
That back on shore waiting patiently
Would be his Mavis Lilly
Now not long into their life together
Came the patter of tiny feet
Allan was there a’causing strife
And Murray thought it pretty neat
Not to be outdone real soon
Along came little Lynn
Well just thing folks with those wee two
Goodness what a din’
Those early days were tough with kids
But Mavis and Murray slave’d
And pretty soon when things were quiet
Along came little David
The kids were always on the go
The stories flowed last night
Of naughty things they got up to
They’d give their Mum a fright
One time two climbed upon a roof
So quiet without a rave
But left out down upon the ground
Was poor old little Dave
“Just wait until your Dad gets home”
I’m sure our Mavis said
When he got home from work that night
He sent them straight to bed
Holidays they would go on
At least for a long week
And if the kids were really good
They’d head off to Spring Creek
The years have gone, the children fled
They’ve left the family home
Out of town and overseas
The offspring, they have flown
And over the time the kids have had
Their own wee families
Well there’s Matt and Andy here today
And Tom and Isabel
Anna and Katherine live up north
New Plymouth, not Savannah
I had to get the verse to rhyme
For my wee niece, Susannah
So here we are today, good folks
I’m sure you think it’s nifty
Please raise your glasses, one and all
And toast the couple’s fifty
