Nana and Grandad's 40th Wedding Anniversary Poem

(Allan)
Many many moons ago
Young Dad went out one night
He went with his friends to see what’s what
To take in all the sights

Down town he spied a fair young lass
Mavis Stevens was her name
Her smile was sweet, her voice was soft
And ping pong was her game

Dad’s heart it started pounding
His face was full of glee
He turned and said to one of his mates
This one will do for me

(Lynn)
But Dad he had a hankering
To head off overseas
On bended knees he begged his Mavis
Please let me go, oh please

History records he did his trip
Returned to his maiden fair
And down the aisle forty years ago
They made a lovely pair

It didn’t take long in the Whaley’s house
For the patter of little feet
Allan soon arrived on the scene
Our parents thought it was neat

(Allan)
Two years went by and along came Lynn
To keep me company
It kept our Dad more occupied
He could bounce one on each knee

Those early days were tough with kids
But Mum and Dad they slave’d
And pretty soon when things were quiet
Along came little David

(Lynn)
Well forty years have flown on by
And the family it has grown
We’ve now got nearly thirty here
To celebrate in our home

We hope you all enjoy your time
‘Cause we think they’re really nifty
Let’s gather again in ten years time
When their anniversary’s fifty!
